It was a LONG day today…
We decided last night to get breakfast elsewhere in Lauterbrunnen instead of doing the breakfast buffet at Hotel Schützen again. We ended up at a cafe called Flavours where we got ice cream both evenings we were in town. Let me tell you, it was exquisite! Brandon had a breakfast burger that came with fried eggs, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole that was out of this world! I had scrambled eggs with sausage and some fresh toasted bread. It filled my soul and my tummy :) On the agenda today was heading to Vaduz, Liechtenstein. It was going to be an interesting travel day anyway as we had a couple of transfers to make throughout the day, but it went from “typical” craziness to minor chaos about halfway into the day… Our train out of Lauterbrunnen took us to Interlaken Ost, which we were familiar with. That was a shorter ride. Then we took another train from Interlaken Ost to Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The longer portion of our day (and it was) was meant to be a train from Bern to Sargans, a town right near the border of Switzerland and Liechtenstein, where we’d then catch a bus to Vaduz and walk a few minutes to our acommodations. All seemed well until about halfway into the Bern —> Sargans trip when the train stopped two stops after Zürich. Initially, they announced there was an incident involving a person, but they would give updates on departures as they knew things. That lasted…ten minutes(?) and then they said the train was headed back to Zürich. So, we stayed on to get back that far to figure out our next move. In Zürich, Brandon diligently looked for any possible workaround to get us to Sargans. All the upcoming possibilities out of Zürich seemed to be listed as cancelled or some other form of “indefinitely delayed”. Eventually, he found us a train that would go to a town where we should have been able to pick up a connecting train to Sargans. While that train did, in fact, depart, it stopped partway along its route due to the previously-mentioned incident, so we ended up on a bus to a town called Pfäffikon, and then we took a train from there that *finally* got us to Sargans. The bus ride, then, was wildly uneventful (thank heavens lol) and we finally checked in at the Jugendherberge (Youth Hostel) Schaan-Vaduz around 7:30 in the evening. Mind you, we left Lauterbrunnen a little after 9 this morning. With all the excitement of the transportation today, I am still quite excited to explore some of Liechtenstein tomorrow! Fun fact, the entire country is approximately 5 square miles bigger than the city limits of Pittsburgh, PA! But, we may be able to get a stamp in our passports, so that’s all that matters to me :) Not so many photos today given all the hullabaloo, but enjoy these few!!
