You read that right, dear friends! Only 7 more days until we head to the airport for our big trip!!
Some more fun details about what we’re doing and where we’re going… We will be gone for 9 (yes, nine!) weeks traveling through Germany (primarily), Switzerland, Austria, and maybe a few other places along the way! We are very grateful as Brandon has some relatives who live in Hattingen, a town in the northwest part of Germany, who have graciously opened their home to us as a “home base” during our stay. We also have some reservations at some VERY cool spots in southern Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Not only do we get to explore together, but we will both be celebrating our birthdays during our trip! Mine is the end of June and Brandon’s is the beginning of August. I am beyond excited!! Some tips I would love to pass on as we prepare for our trip, as we’ve learned a lot already without having left yet: 1) If you have medical insurance through work, I highly recommend looking into seeing if your plan covers you while you are out of country. The chances are slim…HOWEVER, your insurance company may offer an international “rider”. This was actually Brandon’s idea to look into as I am incredibly accident prone. For both of us to get maximum coverage during our 9 week trip, it was only about $250! 2) If you take any kind of medication, talk to your insurance about a vacation override if you will need more than your typical refill amount (depending on the length of your trip). Fair warning: there may still be some out-of-pocket cost, but it will be minimal in comparison to getting charged full price. Speaking from experience, if your trip is near the time you need a refill, get the vacation override, and then go refill for the larger amount needed. I did not and I had multiple trips to the pharmacy and calls to my doctor and insurance to clarify what needed to be done so I was good to go…so learn from my mistakes :) 3) Make sure there is at least one someone with keys to your place while you’re gone. Despite the fact we have some security cameras and such, we have three sets of people with keys to our place so they can check in every now and again. We are also expecting a delivery while we’re gone, so it is nice to have extra people to call on to help us make sure that runs smoothly. 4) If you rent, which we currently do, and your lease renewal comes up during your time away, check with your landlord/property manager to see if you can sort out the renewal before you leave. We did, and it was very helpful both to know that that piece was off our shoulders, but to also give us a sense for what to expect for changes in our rent before we come back so we can plan ahead. I think that’s all I’ve got right now. Stay tuned for more as we begin our adventure!! Alicia
